Postpartum continue your habit of drinking a lot - water or tea should always be within arm's reach. Hydration will make you go to the bathroom more: this will help your body release excess water more easily as well as metabolize any drugs used in birth. Drinking a lot will also help you have easy bowel movements.
Stock the bathroom with necessary items to make it easier for yourself: sanitary pads, extra underwear, filled peri bottle, and paper towels to pat yourself dry (do not flush these). Also, give yourself time in the bathroom so you do not feel rushed. Feed baby, have someone else hold baby if possible, then relax and take your time in the bathroom.
First Bowel Movement
Oftentimes, having your first bowel movement is a bit of a concern as the whole perineum is sore and swollen. You may find you do not have the urge to go number 2 for a day or so. This is mainly due to not eating during labor and the organs are readjusting as they move back into location. Eating well, drinking, and walking within your home will help.
Aphrodite Project recommends:
Eating a healthy 40 Days diet will help. You can also use witch hazel pads or cooled tea bags (any caffeinated type will do).
Walking a lot during the first forty days and eating lots of vegetables will stimulate your large intestine so you have an urge to poop. Having a bowel movement daily, will keep them soft, thus not aggravating hemorrhoids.
Perineum Self Care
Use your peri bottle to wash after going to the bathroom or changing your pads. Gently pat yourself dry - avoid rubbing. Putting your sitz bath herbal tea in the peri bottle will soothe as well as clean.
