Self massage during the postpartum period allow you to reconnect with your body and encourages the release of excess fluid. During the postpartum period, self massage can be done everyday just before or after you shower or bath. The technique is to gently heat oil - I use a double boiler, but a baby bottle warmer or hot plate would work also. Suggested oils are sunflower, sesame seed, olive, and almond oil. Beginning at the feet slowly and deliberately massage the oil into the skin. Once done excess oil can be washed off or patted off with a towel. Apply oil to all parts of your body except your perineum and cesarean area.
